Writing desks are a decorative yet practical item of furniture for the living room or home office. Some styles of desks may be used as dressing tables within the bedroom, or as occasional furniture in other areas of the home.
Desks
Desks were first created in the 17th century and are still as versatile and popular today.
Over the years they have been redesigned as fashions change. The original desks had a sloping surface which opened up to create storage for slates and chalks (the writing implements of the time). The desks were later altered to create “Kneehole Desks” where two sets of
drawers or cupboards were bridged by a large top surface, meaning there was room to accommodate your knees in the middle area when sat on a chair or stool.
Most desks were made of wood in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries and as this was a very expensive resource at the time; desks only really appeared in the homes of the wealthy. They were predominantly found in the gentlemen’s study or the library of stately homes and country manor houses.
Desks were first enjoyed as a domestic piece of furniture. Later as the centuries went by and business, industry and education became more prominent they appeared in offices, places of work and schools throughout the world.
Today, they can be made from various materials including glass, plastic or steel. However traditional solid woods such as Oak, Pine, Walnut, Birch or Ash, along with more recent oriental or tropical woods, are still widely used and are very popular.
Desks and their uses
Desks are an important item in today’s study, library or home office. However they sit just as well in a hallway, family room or lounge as they are a decorative yet very useful piece of furniture.
The desk can be a very useful item for the budding writer or the computer user. They can be used by all members of the family. Having the correct desk may mean more efficiency and productivity in your work.
Desks are able to hold a (PC) computer, a smaller laptop or Notebook, or just writing or drawing materials. Many have extra storage in which to hide away books, writing or sketching materials, computer equipment or other items.
Which room wouldn’t benefit from such extra storage?
