The Coffee Table
Coffee tables have been used in homes for hundreds of years and are still a popular item of furniture today. For many years they were made from traditional woods such as Oak, Ash and Pine. In the present day they also appear in a huge variety of modern materials such as metal, glass, ceramic and plastics.
Often the tops are made from, or covered by, a different substance. This can be one of a wide assortment of older or modern materials such as mosaic ceramics, glass, marble, leather, felt, granite or other stones.
Woods are still used as the main resource for coffee tables. Reproduction wooden items are also made to replicate antique tables from a bygone era.
Coffee tables and their uses
Whilst coffee tables are often seen in homes of all types, they also appear in office staff rooms or waiting spaces and also reception areas such as at the doctor’s or dentist’s surgery.
Coffee tables (also known as cocktail tables) are usually long, low tables which are placed in front of a sofa, settee or chair, usually in the middle of the room. They may be positioned on top of a central decorative rug.
The coffee table is a truly multipurpose piece of lounge furniture. It is a convenient place for resting your cup or mug of coffee (hence the name!) whilst relaxing. It is frequently the centrepiece of a room and is also ideal for placing newspapers, magazines, glasses, teapot and teacups on, whilst chilling out at home. It is often used as a spot to keep the TV remote control to stop it from being lost and also as a place on which to rest your feet after a long day! The coffee table is also used as the position for a laptop or Notebook when emailing or browsing the internet.
They are also ideal to support plates, cups or glasses when eating in front of the TV (therefore becoming a mini-dining table). In addition, the coffee table can be accessorised with coffee table books or an attractive vase of flowers.
Coffee tables often have additional shelves or drawers built within them to create extra storage. Whilst created for a casual relaxing environment, they also fit well within more formal surroundings.
The coffee table often plays a vital part in the modern or traditional lounge, living room, family room or “den”.
